Lot time ago in the 70’s while working on my MFA in Fabric Design I became engaged in mail art. This was before social media, flickr, or YouTube! Artist, Poets, Anarchists would create visual and textual manifestos or gentle works of art. Then they’d put them in an envelope and send to a friend some where else.

I loved collage. Clipping photos from old magazine, rubber stamping, adding layers, adding paper scraps from the streets. Kurt Schwitters is one artist best know for collages and found objects assembled into art.

I became a Certified ORcheologit and authenticate found objects around Athens, GA. To be mailed off to some where else. Since Sally was up in Greenville, NC and I down in Athens, GA I’d send her a lot too. My favorite was a smashed flat aluminum flashlight. I punched a hole in the end. With wire I attach a large tag. One one side were stamps and Sally’s Address. On the reverse side was something about Debbie Boone (singer) and a recent hit: “You Light Up My Life.” XXOO Sally.

It has been a decade or two doing my 2D & 3D collages, but I woke up while awake tonight and realized that lately I am drawn to photographic collages (not scissors need apply). That’s why they are a bit odd. How the various objects, colors, and textures are disparate — but honestly found so close together I can contain them in one photograph. Wow that’s cool! I like it. And now I am beginning to make sense to my own self about my wandering eye for daily collages.
